Why Are New Yorkers Having Their Bagels Scooped Out?
A trend has been catching on in recent years among New Yorkers who want to cut down on the amount of carbs they consume without giving up the bagels they love to eat for breakfast. New Yorkers are having the insides of their bagels scooped out before they are served at bagel shops across the city.
Those who have converted to scooping say the bagels taste just as good as they do with all of their filling. However, to those who have not embraced the trend, it is heresy. Part of the reason is all of the wasted food involved. All of the bagel insides that are scooped out are thrown in the trash.
Several well-known bagel shops in New York scoop bagels on request. Some bagel shop owners and employees have said they find the trend frustrating and annoying, but they feel obligated to give customers what they want.
A book has even been written about the subject: “Should I Scoop Out My Bagel?” by dietitian Ilyse Schapiro and Hallie Rich. They say that people who scoop out their bagels are not missing out on anything important but are cutting out excess calories and carbs. Other experts, however, say the calories cut out are minimal. Nutritionist Marissa Lippert says scooping out a bagel only eliminates up to 75 calories, which is the same number in an apple.
