How to Make Homemade Bagels with a Bread Machine
A bagel with cream cheese is a delicious way to start off a weekend morning. You can make your own bagels at home by following a fairly simple recipe. Some people choose not to make their own bagels because they believe it is too much work to mix and knead the dough. You can make the process faster and easier by using a bread machine to mix the dough. Here is a recipe for homemade bagels made with a bread machine.
1 cup warm water
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
3 cups bread flour
2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
3 quarts boiling water
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon cornmeal
1 egg white
3 tablespoons poppy seeds, or another topping of your choice
Put the 1 cup warm water, salt, 2 tablespoons sugar, flour, and yeast in the bread machine. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to find out in what order you should add the ingredients. Select the dough setting. After the machine has finished making the dough, remove it and place it on a lightly floured surface.
Boil 3 quarts of water and add 3 tablespoons of sugar.
Cut the dough into 9 pieces and roll them into small balls. Flatten each ball and poke a hole in the center with your thumb. Even out the dough around the hole with your finger. Cover the bagels with a clean cloth for 10 minutes.
Sprinkle cornmeal on an ungreased baking sheet. Put the bagels in the boiling water a few at a time. Boil the bagels for 30 seconds and then flip and boil them for another 30 seconds. Drain the bagels on a clean towel and place them on the baking sheet. Wipe egg white on top of each bagel and sprinkle them with poppy seeds or another topping. Bake the bagels at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
