Everything bagels are many people’s favorite breakfast food. If you are planning a brunch or just want some to enjoy throughout the week, try this recipe to cook up a batch of the homemade treats.
1 ¼ cups warm water
1 ½ tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons (1 package) active dry yeast
3 ½ cups bread flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
2 teaspoons poppy seeds
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon coarse grain sea salt
Combine the water and sugar in a bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the yeast and allow the mixture to rest for 6 to 8 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. After the yeast mixture has activated, pour it into the flour mixture. Mix until a crumbly dough forms.
Place the dough on a floured surface and knead it for 6 or 7 minutes, until it becomes elastic-like. If you prefer, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for an hour.
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and divide it into eight pieces. Form each piece into a ball and press your finger through the center to make a hole.
Let the bagels rest for 10 minutes, then place them in a pot of boiling water. Cook them for 45 seconds to 1 minute per side. Remove the bagels from the water and place them on a prepared baking sheet.
Whisk an egg and 1 teaspoon water in a small bowl. Brush the egg wash over the bagels and sprinkle with seeds and sea salt.
Bake the bagels at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Eat them right away or store them in an airtight container for up to five days.
